Joan of Arc Saved France (Lot of 6) Joan of Arc Saved France
Joan of Arc Saved France (Lot of 6) 3-(40" x 30") and 3-(30" x 20") Artist: Haskell Coffin. This was an appeal to women in the war effort; Joan of Arc was a great symbol of a female who had stepped up during war time to lead her country to victory. The Treasury Department used this icon to incite American women to do the same. During the war, over one billion dollars was raised by the sale of thrift stamps and war savings stamps, which were bought primarily by women and children. Coffin too became one of the many illustrators who created a type of girl, the "Coffin girl" was just as well known in its time as the "Christy" or "Gibson" girl. Before his stint in the poster world, Coffin was a well known naval and sea illustrator. This Joan of Arc poster is probably his best known piece, and for good reason, the colors and light on this poster are amazing; his deep tones are contrasted directly by the play of light and shadow on the face and armor. One of the most famous quotes Joan of Arc uttered can be directly linked to the message this poster portrays; she said, "I am not afraid...I was born to do this." <r<r Condition:
Poster 1-Good; minor/major tears on right edge, small/minor tears on top and bottom edges, burst tear on lower left quadrant, wrinkled slightly from uneven rolling. <rPoster 2-Fine; normal wear on edges from storage/rolling, cockling from severe fold memory, stickers on verso need removal before damage occurs.
