Joan Miró is worldwide famous for his abstract language of forms and colors; the auction record for one of the artist’s aquatint etchings currently sets at 71,000 euro
Joan Miró created a unique visual vocabulary which combined the major art movements of Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dadaism and Surrealism. The present work is titled ‘Le Roi David’ and shows an abstract composition of dynamic lines, symbols and dots that are accentuated with bright colors such as blue, red and yellow. In the light of the characteristic title, the image encourages the viewer to develop his own interpretations on the work.
The aquatint etching is signed with pencil lower right ‘Miró’ and inscribed with pencil lower left ‘HC.’. It is verso titled with pencil ‘LE ROI DAVID’. The wove paper shows the watermark by Maeght upper right and the watermark ‘ARCHES FRANCE’ lower right. The paper is slightly toned and shows a clear mat staining and light handling marks throughout. The upper corners reveal the remains of an old mounting on the verso. The plate size is 67.5 x 53.5 cm and the size of the sheet is 90.5 x 63 cm. The framed work measures 107.5 x 84.8 cm.
