Three DSs pertaining to Fontaine’s appearance in Rebecca: agreement between Fontaine and Selznick International Pictures, one page, two sides, 8.5 x 22, June 1939. Screen Actors Guild Contract, in part: “The Producer hereby engages the Artist to render services as such in the role of the second wife, in a photoplay, the working title of which is now Rebecca, at a salary of One Thousand Dollars.” Signed at the bottom of the back page; agreement between Fontaine and Selznick, two onionskin pages, 8.5 x 11, July 7, 1939. In part: “In consideration of One Dollar…paid to you herewith, the receipt of which you hereby acknowledge, you agree that we may exercise the option set forth in paragraph A….” Signed on the first page; agreement between Fontaine and Selznick, three onionskin pages, 8.5 x 11, December 7, 1939, concerning the modification of the June agreement. Signed on the second page. In fine condition, with light handling wear and filing punch holes. David O. Selznick had asked Fontaine to audition for the part of the unnamed heroine in Rebecca and endured a six-month series of film tests, along with hundreds of other actresses, before securing the part. Rebecca, released in 1940, marked the American debut of Alfred Hitchcock and earned Fontaine an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
