Vintage matte-finish 10 x 13.25 portrait of Joan Crawford posing closely with her first husband Douglas Fairbanks Jr., cryptically signed and inscribed by both in fountain pen, with Crawford writing, “Syd dear after all the years of sincere friendship you’ve given me, the only thing I can give you in return is friendship that is as equally sincere, God bless you, Always, Mrs. Dodo,” and by Fairbanks, “May Billie’s expressed sentiment be an opportunity for my or our future joint and prospective friendship—just ‘cause you’re being married tomorrow don’t think that you’re the luckiest man in the world—you’re not—I am—Best ever—Mr. Billie Bum.” In very good to fine condition, with some surface nicks and marks and photo trimmed and mounting remnants to reverse. Crawford and Fairbanks were married from 1929 to 1933, and were deemed Hollywood’s golden couple during their briefly intense romance. Crawford’s penned surname of “Mrs. Dodo” is in reference to her husband’s nickname, Dodo, whereas Fairbanks’s playful signature likewise refers to his spouse; Crawford preferred the name “Billie” as a child growing up in Oklahoma.
