Jimmy Perry is best known for co-writing the sitcom Dad's Army alongside David Croft.
Dad's Army, which ran between 1968 and 1977, was about the Home Guard during the Second World War. The Home Guard was a British defence organisation for volunteers who were otherwise ineligible for military service.
Dad's Army featured many popular catchphrases including "you stupid boy", "don't panic!", "put that light out!" and "they don't like it up 'em!".
The series gained 18 million viewers and is still regularly repeated on television today. It was so popular that a radio series, a feature film and a stage show were also created.
This sheet, which measures 7" x 9", features handwritten lines from the original script of the first episode of Dad's Army, written by Jimmy Perry.
David Croft has added his signature at the top of the page, and a handwritten introduction that reads:
"Permission to speak Sir... Mr Jimmy Perry will write this bit of script."
Below this are several lines of script from the very first episode of Dad's Army, written by Perry in blue ink.
The lines of script feature dialogue between Lance-Corporal Jones and Captain Mainwaring and include one of Dad's Army's most famous catchphrases "they don't like it up 'em" spoken by Lance-Corporal Jones.
Perry has added a note at the bottom of the page which reads:
"Dear Mr Waits,
Thank you for your letter, I hope you like this little bit of the original script from the first episode.
Best Wishes
Jimmy Perry"
The item originates from the famous Waits Collection - one of the largest autograph collections of recent times.
The sheet is mounted to an album page alongside 2 newspaper clippings and a small picture of Perry. There is some tearing to the left side of the abum page which measures 9.5" 14.5".
The script and autographs are in excellent condition.
