Official white-matte RIAA gold record sales award presented “to Mitch Mitchell to commemorate the sale of more than one million dollars worth of Reprise Records long-playing record album ‘Cry of Love.’” Framed with its disc, plate, and a small image of the album cover to an overall size of 17.5 x 21.5. Award retains its original tape-repaired New York Frame & Picture backing. In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Mitchell’s widow, Dee, in part: “This award was presented to my husband, Mitch Mitchell, drummer in the Experience. The award was owned by Mitch and then me.” The first of a number of albums released following the tragic death of Jimi Hendrix, The Cry of Love consisted of ten original songs the guitarist had been preparing for an upcoming album. Released in March 1971, The Cry of Love became an instant hit in the UK and US, selling over 500,000 copies by the following month. Along with Hendrix, Mitchell was credited as one of the record’s producers, assisting with final mixes and track selection. Original ‘white matte’ style awards such as these, presented to band members, are highly desired by collectors.
