DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, November 19, 1969. Official letter directed to the Yameta Company, in full: "You are named as the fifth defendant in the action now pending in the High Court of Justice, Queen's Bench Division, and assert that I am liable for your legal expenses in defending the suit. I am advised by my American attorney, Henry W. Steingarten, that I am liable only in the event it is finally adjudicated that I misrepresented my contractual status at the time I entered into my agreement with you. In any event, I have arranged with Messrs. Goodman, Derrick & co., who represent me in the English action, to assume your defense of the action without any cost to you. I also undertake to indemnify you in respect of any judgment which may be entered against you in the action, including possible court costs. In view of this undertaking on my part, my English attorneys may decide to strike from your answer your claim over against me, which now becomes unnecessary. With respect to the outstanding bill rendered by Clintons to Yameta for $5,000., arrangements are being made to pay the same, but such payment is conditioned upon the agreement that there will be no further bills for legal services rendered by Clintons to Yameta in respect of the above action, for which you claim I am responsible and upon the agreement that you will not assert any further and additional claim against me except in conformity with the provisions of this letter." Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Hendrix. In fine condition, with trivial corner creasing, a tiny piece of old tape to the left edge, and a light block of toning from prior display.

In October 1965, Hendrix was introduced to Curtis Knight’s manager, Ed Chalpin, and his management company PPX. Soon thereafter Knight and the Squires recorded for PPX, and Chalpin, amazed by the young guitarist’s talents, convinced Hendrix to sign an exclusive three-year deal with PPX—purportedly for a total sum of one dollar. As Hendrix’s popularity began to surge in the middle of 1966, the guitarist errantly signed an additional management contract with Chas Chandler of Yameta in England. Eager to bank on the success of Hendrix’s debut album, Are You Experienced, as well as his iconic performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Chalpin sued Hendrix and Yameta, in both London and New York, for breach of contract. Chalpin and PPX were awarded a payout of $1,000,000 and a share of future royalties.

Ultimately, Hendrix agreed to release a live album to satisfy the terms of the lawsuit. He formed the Band of Gypsys with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox, and they performed their only full concerts at the Fillmore East on December 31, 1969, and January 1, 1970, which were recorded and released as the self-titled Band of Gypsys album. This was the last album Hendrix released before his untimely death. This lot includes three modern prints of copyrighted photos taken at the shows. Additional recordings of these shows were released on the posthumous album Live at the Fillmore East. A significant document relating to a business decision that would affect Hendrix over the entirety of his brief yet brilliant career, which culminated in these infamous and legendary Fillmore East concerts. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
