Jim Starlin - Death of Captain Marvel Graphic Novel, page 47 Original Art (Marvel, 1982). Captain Marvel discovers that his exposure to a form of nerve gas several years before has given him cancer, and it's now only a matter of time before he succumbs to it. As the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe scramble for a cure (echoing our own world's frustrations with the disease), Marvel makes his peace with friends and foes alike before silently passing into a coma. Writer and artist Jim Starlin was using superheroes to write a very human story about the pain and anguish that comes hand in hand with a disease that devastates millions of ordinary people. His story was -- and remains -- so powerful that Marvel has never resurrected the character, knowing that a stunt like that would cheapen what has become one of the most moving stories ever published in mainstream comics. This poignant page from Marvel's first graphic novel, The Death of Captain Marvel remains special thanks in part to its respect and recognition of the finality of death.
