Three limited edition books: The New Creatures, 1969, hardcover, 5.75 x 8.75, signed and inscribed in blue felt tip, “To Michael Cuscuna, J. Morrison”; An American Prayer, 1970, hardcover, 4 x 5, signed in black felt tip on the half title page, “J. Morrison”; and an unsigned The Lords: Notes On Vision folio, 1969, complete with all 82 sheets. In overall fine condition, with An American Prayer missing all of the paper along its spine but the pages fully intact.

This unique trio comprises the three books of poetry created by Morrison and privately published by him. The Lords: Notes On Vision was printed in the spring of 1969 by Western Lithographers, one of only 100 copies. That was followed by the 100-edition The New Creatures and the 500-edition An American Edition. Cuscuna, the original owner, is a record producer and writer who, in the summer of 1969, was contacted by an Elektra Records publicity representative and told Morrison wanted the writer to prepare a feature article on the Doors singer. Morrison respected jazz and wanted to move musically in that direction.

Cuscuna and Morrison met in September 1969 and became friends, with their interview turning into dinner, a concert invitation, and an after-party. After the article was published in a May 1970 edition of Down Beat Magazine (the ‘hippest’ music magazine of its era), Morrison sent these three books to Cuscuna, who kept them before parting with them in 2010. Accompanied by copies of three letters of authenticity from Cuscuna and a copy of the magazine with Cuscuna’s article. All three books—particularly An American Edition and The Lords—are exceedingly scarce due to their small print run. The addition of Morrison’s seldom encountered signature and the link to one of his last interviews make this presentation impossible to duplicate. This is truly a one-of-a-kind slice of Rock and Rock history!
