Jewish Brigade. Broadside, Dec. 1943, p
Jewish Brigade. Broadside, Dec. 1943, part of their struggle for identity during World War II. As part of the British Army, they had been issued "Palestine" cloth insignia for their uniforms. Several soldiers of this unit refused to wear such insignia and were sentenced to two months hard labor. Chief Rabbi Ouziel and Prof. Joseph Klausner were allowed to deliver their message to the British Court Martial. "The term 'Palestine' is a deep insult for Jews...Refusal to wear this insignia is merely a refusal of an illegal order...." Broadside states "...millions of us (were) exterminated just for being Jews...Millions of Jewish soldiers are fighting on all fronts...It is about time to remove the shame of anonymity from our soldiers...30,000 Palestinian Jewish volunteers...demand the right to fight as Jews...." 63/4 x 121/4, printed in Hebrew on one side. The Jewish Brigade achieved an enviable record for bravery in World War II. Fine and rare.
