ALS signed “Ian,” 5 x 8, no date, but circa 1967–68. Letter to his girlfriend Yvonne Nicholson, in part: "Do you sill love me? I hope to God that you do. I was thinking very hard about you tonight and suddenly the main thing I have to look forward to is seeing you next week. I really mean that. It will be the next major development in my life. Will you marry me before I go to America? I seem to remember saying that before! If I do actually go this time, I think it would be a good idea. I don't suppose you will though…I hope you pass this audition as it will be nice to take you out occasionally. Marry. Marry. Marry. Take you out more often then. Buy you new glasses too. Marry. Marry. Marry. I am going to find a flat with a double bed in a couple of weeks. Random thoughts. I wish that you were here now. NOW!!!…You didn't send me that bit of verse. Why not? is that what you won't talk about on the phone? I don't understand. Do you lobe me? I love you. I could manage without music but not without you. Sounds rubbish doesn't it? Well I don't think so…I would even give up smoking for you. Or shave off my beard. Or join the civil service but not the army for you…Surrender your body to me and I will plant a flag on it. Or raise it as a statue. Or kiss it tenderly (but not with passion because you would not like that) Would you? Write back to me now. Please. Or I will marry someone else. Honest." A few words covered over with white-out. In fine condition.
