Toledo, Jerry. From Cuba, New Mexico and known for his sand paintings created with layers of sand giving a three dimensional appearance. Sand paintings are used in healing ceremonies; patient lies on the sand painting and sand from it sprinkled on the patient’s body. After the ceremony, the painting is destroyed, destroying the illness. This painting is in colored sand of a Native American Hoop Dancer. The hoop dance is performed using the hoops to resemble the shape of various living things; butterfly, eagle, snake, and coyote. The hoop itself represents the never ending circle of life.
