Highly regarded American songwriter (1885–1945) best known for the musical Showboat and for such standards as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Exceptional AMQS on an off-white 5.25 x 3.25 musically lined card. Kern pens five double bars from “The Last Time I Saw Paris,” and signs and inscribes at the top, “To William deMelt, With the thanks of the American National Red Cross and his sincerely, Jerome Kern.” In 1940, Kern and Oscar Hammerstein wrote “The Last Time I Saw Paris,” in homage to the French city just recently occupied by the Germans. Originally a hit for Tony Martin, the song was used in the film Lady Be Good and won another Oscar for Best Song—the only time a song not written for the film it appears in won the Oscar. It would later inspire the title of the 1954 film The Last Time I Saw Paris. In fine condition, with a mild shade of overall toning.
