Rare fair copy musical manuscript of ‘The Way You Look To-night,’ on four pages of two adjoining 9.25 x 12.5 sheets of musical manuscript paper. Signed by Kern under the title, and annotated at the bottom of the first page, “T. B. Harris Company 1936,” Kern goes on to pens 72 bars of music and lyrics to the song. Several brushes to music and lyrics throughout, scattered light creasing and handling wear, and uniform toning to pages, otherwise fine condition.

Writing ‘The Way You Look To-night’ and other songs for the film Swing Time afforded Kern his only opportunity to write a new score for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In the picture, Astaire’s character of John ‘Lucky’ Garnett serenaded Rogers’ character, Penny Carroll, with the tune while she was was busy washing her hair in an adjacent room...and feeling anything but beautiful. The song, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936, is generally considered one of the high points of Kern’s career. A decidedly rare, one-of-a-kind item in the hand of the great composer…and a song that has since become a standard!
