Jeopardy 1850. Curiosa: a self-cover bo
Jeopardy 1850. Curiosa: a self-cover book, opening to an oversize illustrated broadside, crammed with a wealth of closely-set facts, figures, and trivia -- c. 1850. "Mnemonical and Statistical Chart - Designed as a key and assistant in acquiring a knowledge of Professor Pike's System of Mnemonics, Comprising all the Rules of the Science...together with a Mnemonical Dictionary, and a great number of Historical, Geographical, Astronomical, Botanical and Miscellaneous Statistics." "Selected and Arranged by L.D. Otis and O.H. Bradley," n.p., evidently 1850. 201/2 x 291/2 horizontal. With six charming woodcuts, including American flag, tiger, ship at sea, bird, penknife, elephant, and an unnamed Ben Franklin standing on a globe harnessing lightning, surrounded by the legend "Memory holds the key of science, and science wields the weapon of power." With mass of information. Short tear and light chipping along one fold affecting several words, toning at other folds, else good, and highly unusual for display, likely to keep admirers busy for hours! The most common form of self-cover publications were maps; novelty items such as this are very scarce in this form.
