This exquisite 10-leaf (or petal) fan appears to be handmade from thick parchment or a material like capiz shells, or possibly some other finely worked material, which has been carefully cut into intricate and very ornate feather-like individual blades, and further decorated with gilded edging and artistry. This style of fan is known as "Jenny Lind" because the famous singer used these fans in many of her performances during the 1800s. Each leaf is attached with twine to a spine, and the attached loop at the base is made from the same material as the spines. We are informed that this is known as a BRISE style of fan. When fully open the fan has a span of almost 15 inches and each blade is 3 inches across by almost six inches in lenth, with the spines being about 6.5 inches in length each. - I believe this to be of English origin from the Victorian era, when handmade fans were frequently given as gifts to brides.
I have however also received information from a very helpful & knowledgable collector of fans, who has suggested that this vintage handmade Jenny Lind Brise fan may be Indonesian in origin, possibly from Java. Although there is slight wear to this gorgeous ladies fan, its overall condition is excellent and whatever its actual origin, this certainly is a very lovely and very intricately made ladies fan, which will enhance any fan collection.
