Jenks .54 caliber percussion “mule-ear” carbine made by N. P. Ames, Springfield, Mass. 24-1/2” round barrel, .54 caliber smoothbore with brass mounts. Shows round loading aperture at breech, refer Flayderman 9B-061. The metal surfaces show a light grey to brown patina finish with some traces of case hardening mixed into the lock, some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting. The stock is good with a compression crack in front of the locks and slight loss of wood in that area, otherwise stock is good with traces of inspector’s cartouche. The butt shows small dings and mars. The action is good, the bore is fair to good. The lever, which activates the plunger is marked “21” and “20” on the inside. Few of the Jenks are known with the round loading port and are of premium value to collectors. From an old northeast collection where it has been since long before WWII. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
