Very early 19 April 1802 four-languages ship's paper boldly signed by Thomas Jefferson as President and countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. The ship's paper authorizes the passage of the schooner ''Atlanta'' captained by Thomas Hasam of New York and reads in part: ''…Be it known, that leave and permission are hereby given to Thomas Hasam of New York, master or commander of the schooner called the Atlanta of the burthen of[sic] tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for Curacoa…and laden with…pork, beef, flour, tobacco…paper, dry good, cheese, sourkrout, cucumbers…sausages, barley…to depart and proceed with his said schooner on his said voyage, such schooner having been visited, and the said Thomas Hasam having made oath before the proper officer, that the said schooner belongs to one or more of the citizens of the United States of America, and to him only…'' Also includes notation that blindstamped seal was affixed by Collector of the Customs, David Gelston. Minor wrinkling and folds throughout, with a horizontal fold running through the ''TH'' and the ''J'' in Jefferson's signature. Madison's signature is unaffected by the folds. Document measures 20'' x 16'' and is nicely framed to an overall size of 27'' x 23'', with original blindstamped seal intact at left margin of document. Both signatures are very bold and clear. Very good condition overall.
