Rare and early ALS signed as president of the Confederacy, “Jeffer Davis,” one page, 5 x 7.75, March 21, 1861. Letter to Charles Parry in Burlington, New Jersey. In full: “Yours was duly received and I have the honor to be very respectfully yrs.” In very good to fine condition, with light edge toning from previous display, scattered light creasing and wrinkling, and a bit of light soiling slightly affecting end of signature.
Accompanied by a scan of the original General Order.
On the day this letter was sent, Davis also commissioned the 17-year-old Parry as a colonel of infantry in the Confederate Army. The newly appointed officer was charged with the responsibility “to raise, arm and equip a regiment of infantry at the expense of the Confederated States.” The New Jersey resident, who at the time was enrolled in a Quaker boarding school, was perhaps dissatisfied with his home state’s Union allegiance—an odd circumstance, considering the Quakers’ dim view of slavery. For whatever reason, young Mr. Parry was moved by his own personal convictions, it would seem, to offer his services to President Davis. Three weeks later, on April 11, the shots fired at Fort Sumter would launch the nation into war. However, as no record exists of his ever having served the South, Parry either reconsidered his allegiance and disregarded the order, or found it revoked after his young age was revealed. Parry would go on to work in the family’s New Jersey nursery after the war. A desirable and most unusual letter. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
