Desirable autograph endorsement, "Approved, Jeffer. Davis, Sec'y of War," on the reverse of a letter sent to him by Chief of Ordnance Henry K. Craig, 7.75 x 9.75, October 5, 1855. The letter, signed "H. K. Craig," in full: "I propose proceeding to Harpers Ferry Va, in a few days, for the purpose of making the annual inspection of the Armory there, in compliance with Articles 14 & 15 of Ord. Regulations, and of Spec. Order No. 1 of 1855, and have to request your approval." In fine condition. John Brown's raid on the armory at Harpers Ferry would begin almost exactly four years later, on October 16, 1859. An interesting piece concerning a significant landmark of the era.
