Civil War-dated LS signed “Jeff’n. Davis,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9.75, Confederate States of America, Executive Department letterhead, February 9, 1863. Letter to his nephew, John Taylor Wood, in full: “You will immediately proceed to Wilmington, Charleston, Svannah, Mobile, Vicksburg, Port Hudson and to such other points as it may be necessary to visit in order to carry out the instructions that will be given you. Upon the completion of this duty, you will return to Richmond, and report at this office.” In fine condition. John Taylor Wood was the son of Union General Robert Wood and Anne Taylor, the daughter of Zachary Taylor. Following his exploits as an officer aboard the CSS Virginia, Wood was appointed as an aide-de-camp to his uncle, President Davis. With his promotion Wood undertook an extensive survey of Confederate coastal defenses and led a series of successful raids against Union shipping in Chesapeake Bay during the summer of 1863.
