Jefferson Davis Signed Check. Although not a Confederate note, this item is best sold in this section as it is a piece of financial and historical memorabilia that will greatly interest many collectors of CSA currency. This check, dated Dec. 5, 1872, is drawn on the Union & Planters Bank of Memphis, Tennessee, and is check number 73. Davis' signature is very lightly smudged, but it appears bold and clear. The check itself is cancelled, but it appears bright and crisp and is not folded. The Union & Planters Bank was founded in 1869, and the former Confederate President, Senator, and U.S. Secretary of War was one of its first depositors. According to bank records, Davis wrote only 115 checks on this account. This is only the second Jefferson Davis signed check to appear on the market; check number 98 from this same account was sold in the 1996 ANA sale in Denver by Heritage.
