<B>Jefferson Davis Manuscript Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Jeffer. Davis</B></I>." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", plain paper, Washington, October 22, 1855, to the Hon. John Randolph Clay. At the time of writing, Davis was secretary of war for President Franklin Pierce. Clay was a career diplomat who served in Europe and Latin America in the period between 1830 and 1860 and, in 1855, was stationed in Peru. This is a letter of introduction to Clay for a "<I>...Mr. J. R Warren of New York who is about to visit Peru with the view of commencing business as a merchant...</B></I>" Expected original folds, else very fine with a large signature. <BR><BR>Also included in this lot is a handsome <I>carte de visite</B></I> by E. & H.T. Anthony from a negative by Mathew Brady.
