Jefferson Davis Autograph Note Signed "Jeffer..Davis" as Pierce's Secretary of War, one page, 3.75" x 6". [Washington], November 8, 1855. To Chas. H. Anderson. "Born." penned in a blank area at lower left, probably by Anderson. In full, "I have the honor to be very respectfully your fellow citizen." On laid paper with blind embossed logo in upper left "Taylor & Maury/Washington." Taylor & Maury was a prominent Washington stationer, bookseller, and publisher. Jefferson Davis, the only President of the Confederate States of America, had represented Mississippi in the House (1845-1846) and the Senate (1847-1851). He resigned from the Senate to run for Governor and lost. Davis was President Franklin Pierce's only Secretary of War (1853-1857). Returning to the U.S. Senate in 1857, he withdrew on January 21, 1861 with other secessionist Senators. Light tanning on most of the letter. Mounting remnants on verso at corners lightly show through. Accompanied by a 4.5" x 8.5" engraved portrait of Davis (image 2.75" x 4") as Secretary of War.
