Jefferson Davis ALS 1861
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Jefferson Davis Civil War dated letter signed to Warren Winslow, an important actor in North Carolina politics at the start of the war. Single page datelined Richmond, Virginia, 8 July 1861, letter reads in full: ''Your letter of the 4th inst. (with its enclosures) has been received. There was an appropriation by the Congress at is last Session for repairs of the Machinery at Harper's Ferry. I have written to Capt. Montgomery on the subject of ordnance. The 24 pd. Howitzer would not be suitable for him. Very truly yr's, Jeffn. Davis.'' On lined paper measuring 7.5'' x 7.75'' Lot includes lithograph of Davis. When North Carolina seceded from the Union, Winslow moved from U.S. Representative to advisor of Governor John Ellis and Chairman of the state's Military and Naval Board, probably his role in this letter by Davis. Winslow erroneously believed the rough coastline of the state would protect the coastal forts, so he did not step up manpower in that area at the beginning of the war. The Union quickly took North Carolina's coastal defenses and Winslow resigned his office. He died the following year.
