Titled “The Crowd at Ringside,” the photo was taken during the “Fight of the Century" between Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries, in which Johnson, a black man, prevailed against the favored Jeffries. The image was taken by Percy Dana of San Francisco, known for his photos of the earthquake destruction in that city a few years earlier (1906). Magazines and newspapers sent their top correspondents to Reno to cover the contest, among them Jack London, John L. Sullivan, Bat Masterson, Rube Goldberg, Rex Beach, and a host of others. Photo is 7" x 9” and glued to a piece of white cardboard. Accompanied by a brief photocopied description of the fight and Johnson’s subsequent life. -58756
