Jeff Davis PGT Beauregard Patriotic Ferrotype
1861 Jeff Davis Patriotic Ferro
An exceptionally significant item: a two-sided, 24 mm ferrotype badge with portraits on opposite sides titled, "DAVIS" and "BEAUREGARD." Similar to Sullivan #C-1861-16, this has a hollow frame more than an 1/8" thick. Jefferson Davis (1808-89), President of the Confederate States of America, a Senator from Mississippi who had served as Secretary of War 1853-57, was captured by Union Calvary troops on May 10, 1865 in Irwinville, Georgia. A contemporary story, often repeated by early historians, had Davis in drag when he was discovered -- wearing women's clothing to elude capture. While there's no truth to the story, it is still often cited as fact. After two years of imprisonment, Davis -- who was never brought to trial -- was freed after the general amnesty of 1868. His final years were occupied with documenting the Great War authoring, " The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government," in 1881. This rare keepsake, a Confederate "patriotic" device, shows typical age -- a few small areas of emulsion loss on Davis' portrait detracts little, mostly visible when angled to the light; the Beauregard side has two lines of crazing through the center. Overall a fine example of a scarce item. From the Joe Brown Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. Lot:27250
