French astronomer, mathematician, and politician (1736–1793) who was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. ADS, in French, signed “Bailly,” one page, 7 x 4.5, November 1, 1786. In part (translated): “I acknowledge receipt of two octavo volumes titled The Science of Navigable Canals…these two volumes belong to the Library of the Academy.” In very good condition, with an overall shade of toning and moderate scattered soiling and foxing.
