Jean Royere Liane luminaire France, 195
Jean Royere Liane luminaire France, 1959 enameled steel, brass, parchment 97.5"w x 6"d x 78"h Jean RoyereÍs training as an interior designer is apparent in the warmth, originality, and innovation of his furniture designs. His forms have come to represent the fusion of a universal modernism and personalized exoticism, with the evocative decoration in his otherwise reductive forms contrasting with much of the influential industrial designers such as Mies van der Rohe, Aalto, and Eames. The tenet of Modernism that Royere forged in the 1940s has become synonymous with a luxuriousness and comfort still sought after today. The Liane luminaire is an exceptional example of RoyereÍs characteristic refined classicism. The four entwined arms recall swaying tree branches in a form that reinterprets Art Nouveau decoration from the 1930s. The purity of the lines compliments the grand size and rich material of the design resulting in an elaborate yet minimal work that embodies the intensity of RoyereÍs interiors. This elaborate wall light was created by Royere for a private commission in Egypt. Provenance: Private collection, Cairo Private collection, Paris
