French painter (1814–1875) known as one of the founders of the Barbizon school. ALS in French, signed “J. F. Millet,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, March 16, 1869. Lengthy letter about his work of decoration and his paintings, in part (translated): "It is difficult for me to judge from here that the drawings you tell me about will be suitable for an exhibition. Something can look very good and may not have a sufficient impact to fill in a large space. You should check it yourself by looking which drawings can have the greatest effect. It also seems to me that you are starting quite late because even if the drawings are suitable you may not have enough time to frame them. I can tell you the drawings gave me a very good impression but there is a big difference between something that one can look by holding it in ones hands and something that has to impress from distance because of the vastness of the place where it is shown and also in view of the company of other drawings by other artists. Do think about this…I will not participate in any shows this year because of the heavy work of decoration I am now doing that has prevented me from doing things as good as I wanted to…In such circumstances, I would rather abstain. I do work at my ceiling but it is very difficult to paint in the conditions where I am now. The weather is so dark since a few days that it is very uncomfortable in these circumstances but I will have to end it anyway." In fine condition, with a very small hinge repair.
