French painter (1814"“1875) known as one of the founders of the Barbizon school. ALS in French, signed "J. F. Millet," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.25, May 13, 1863. Addressed from the famed village of Barbizon, an untranslated letter from Jean-François Millet to his brother Jean. In fine condition, with a few small old tape repairs.

Active roughly from 1830 through 1870, the Barbizon school of painters was part of an art movement towards Realism in art, and it took its name from the village of Barbizon, France, on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. In addition to Jean-François Millet, the leaders of the Barbizon school included Théodore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny, Jules Dupré, Constant Troyon, Charles Jacque, and Narcisse Virgilio Díaz.
