French naturalist and biologist (1744–1829) known as an early proponent of the concept of evolution and his mistaken theory of the inheritance of acquired characteristics. ALS in French, signed “Lamarck,” one page, 7.25 x 9, no date but circa 1811. In part (translated): “I have the honor of addressing to you a copy of my treatise On the Variations of State of the Sky. It is in homage that I ask you to accept as a token of my sincere devotion and my wish to regain completely your assistance in my efforts toward the advancement of an interesting science which has remained without progress; and which evidently needs to be considered in all aspects. Would you please, Sir, render justice to me which I believe I deserve, forgive my involuntary wrong doings, and accord me your past consideration. I have decided, from now on, neither to report any information to the Minister nor to request from him any information relative to the Meteorologic Correspondence but obtain this information only from your source. If I should not have the joy of regaining your trust and assistance, I will cease to pursue the project of utilizing myself to this effect, but, since I hope that you have for me the same esteem that you have only for those whom you consider, those who can be of some good to mankind, I assure you that you can count on my eternal gratefulness.” In very good to fine condition, with light overall mottled toning. Accompanied by a full English translation.
