French military officer (1763–1844) who was appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon and later became King of Sweden (as Charles XIV Johan) and King of Norway (as Charles III John) from 1818 until his death. Scarce, lengthy autograph endorsement in French, signed “J: Bernadotte,” one page, 3.5 x 5.25, no date. Bernadotte recommends a petitioner, calling him a citizen “animated by a real love of his country, a clear patriotism, and a constant honesty.” In fine condition, with closely trimmed edges and show-through from writing on the reverse in another hand. This is the first autograph letter or note of Bernadotte that we have offered; his signed letters and documents are typically penned in a clerical hand.
