Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte Document Signed "J. Bernadotte". One page, 8" x 12.25", dated "7 floréal an 13" or April 27, 1806. French by birth, Bernadotte (1763-1844) was one of Napoleon's most controversial marshals. Marshal Bernadotte's military talents were unquestioned, but he incurred the displeasure of Napoleon for not participating with his army corps in the battles of Jena though close at hand. He was later was stripped of his command after retreating against Napoleon's orders. In 1810 he was about to enter upon his new post of governor of Rome when he was, unexpectedly, elected heir to King Charles XIII of Sweden. Bernadotte was adopted by Charles XIII under the name of "Charles John" (Karl Johan). The new crown prince was very soon the most popular and the most powerful man in Sweden. The government, and especially the control of foreign affairs were entirely in his hands. The keynote of his whole policy was the acquisition of Norway. After securing Norway, Bernadotte, now Charles XIV John, was a unional king, popular in both countries. Swedes and Norwegians alike were proud of a monarch with a European reputation. The document is in very good condition, with pencil notations and an old label glued on the front with a translation.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
