ALS signed “J. G.,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.75, October 17, 1865. Letter discussing financial matters regarding a slate quarry in Middle Granville, New York. In part: “I notice what you say in relation to Ben…& it would be a good plan for you to keep your eye out for a good man to take his place—it will be policy to keep him along until the cold weather sets in next month…Ben seems so perfectly careless…I do not know what to make of him—I should like to see some way for getting back the money he received…In relation to…Jones proposition for sale of his quarry…I do not think there is any money…I think we can make a better bargain with John R. Williams.” Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Gould to an overall size of 14.5 x 11.75, with a window on the reverse for viewing the first page. Intersecting folds and a tear near the top affecting a few words, otherwise fine condition. Gould held interests in several businesses in this area, including investments in rail services for shipping. Slate had been discovered in 1850 near Middle Granville, and William R. Williams opened the first quarry in 1852; he was soon joined by his brother John R. Willliams to expand the commercial operation. Desirable business content from the archetypal ‘robber baron.’
