Jay Gould - Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway (Texas) This 100 share certificate was issued in 1880 to Jay Gould and is signed by him twice, as President and again on the verso. Even to this day his name remains a synonym for financial manipulation. He was involved in an attempt to corner the gold market, the failure of which caused a panic termed "Black Friday" in September of 1869. It is estimated that by 1880 he controlled 10% of the railroad track in the United States. He went on to gain control of the Western Union Telegraph Company. By the time of his death in 1892 he had a fortune estimated at $72 million. Four large hole cancellations affect his Presidential signature on the front and just barely touch his verso signature. A piece is missing at the upper left corner. An opportunity to own a piece of American railroad and financial history associated with a name which remains a household word more than a century after his death. Fine. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
