<B>Jasper Yeates (1745 - 1817), Jurist and Pennsylvania revolutionary, Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>J: Yeates</B></I>", two pages, 7.5" x 9.25", Lancaster, Pennsylvania, September 21, 1781 discussing support for refugees in South Carolina and Georgia. He writes in part: "<I>...We have also wrote circular Letters to our Friends in different Parts of this County, requesting their Assistance towards carrying the humane Intentions of congress in to Execution... The Scarcity of hard Cash amongst us & the heavy Taxes lately laid are great Impediments in the County to many who would cheerfully [sic] contribute towards the Relief to he distressed Citizens of the States of South Carolina & Georgia...</B></I>" The British ravaged the South between 1779 and 1781 and remained in possession of Charleston, South Carolina until 1782. Many of the refugees were from the captured cities of Charleston and Savannah... their plight would remedied with the British withdrawal in 1782. Light soiling, else Very good. A fine specimen.
