<B>Jared Sparks Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>Jared Sparks</B></I>," one page, 8" x 10". Cambridge, Mass., April 2, 1846. Integral leaf addressed by Sparks to "<I>Mrs. Mary J. Armstrong,/Maysville,/Kentucky</B></I>," postmarked Cambridge, April 3rd. Replying to a "<I>letter asking for autographs of men distinguished in the Revolution</B></I>," Sparks encloses "<I>a very good specimen of Washington's handwriting. I only regret that I cannot furnish a signature. I also send a scrap by Lafayette.</B></I>" Neither is present. Sparks explains that a "<I>vast many papers of the revolutionary times have passed through my hands, but my object being solely to procure historical materials, I have always returned the originals to the owners. It is true that many original letters have from time to time fallen into my possession, yet the applications for autographs have been so numerous & frequent, that my stock has long been exhausted.</B></I>" Jared Sparks most important work was his 12 volume <I>Life and Writings of George Washington (</B></I>1834-1837). At the time of this letter, Sparks was McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University (1839-1849), serving as President of Harvard from 1849-1853. Folds, lightly creased at upper right. Darkly penned.
