We believe mid-late Edo period. The top of the Kashira (pommel), Fuchi (collar) and the scabbard Kojiri (end cap) all feature an intricate depiction of a storm at sea with powerful waves, drawing heavily from Shinto beliefs and a profound connection to the ocean. The Kashira and Fuchi have small gold inlays. These motifs often embody concepts of strength, resilience, change, and the unpredictable nature of life. 21 3/4" blade with wavy tempered line. The blade’s Nakago (tang) has two Mekugi-Ana (peg holes) indicating some age as it has clearly been mounted two separate times in the past. The Gokatana (blade of the Kozuka) is signed but the wakizashi itself is not. Ray skin hilt with black cloth wrapping, the Menuki appear to be a floral design with gold inlayed flowers/leaves. (Hard to see with the wrap) Circle-shaped iron Tsuba with Kozuka and Kougai holes with two spacers. Black lacquered wood scabbard with Kozuka ( utility/paper knife). It's rectangular handle depicts six Sumo wrestlers with gold inlay. Blade is near excellent with some minor scratches, scabbard is excellent. there is some tears with some loss to the cloth wrapping. Missing peg.
