We believe mid-late Edo period. The top of the Kashira (pommel) features an intricate depiction of a home and village scene, symbolizing peace, tradition, and rural life. The Fuchi (collar) has a solid gold inlayed Japanese crest (Mon or Kamon) featuring a small solid circle surrounded by five larger solid circles, within a circle. ray skin hilt with black cloth wrapping, the menuki appear to be in the shape of an arrow with a gold inlayed dot near the tip. The plain blade is 13 1/2" , overall length 22". The brass Habaki is adorned with abstract symbols, the one hole in the tang looks punched, not drilled, has a five Mei signature. No Tsuba, not sure if it had one as many came without one. The black lacquered scabbard is wrapped in black leather, missing the Kozuka (Small knife) and the Kolguchi (Scabbard Mouth). there is a 1 1/2"chip out of lacquer in the top backside. Has an old cloth tag with Japanese writing. The blade is overall bright with some scattered minor pits on the lower end. has a non-traditional brass peg in the hilt. Worthy of further research.
