Japanese WW2 Officer's Sword.
Late WW II Type 98 Japanese Army Officers Shin-Gunto Sword. "Showato" sword, refers to Japanese swords made during the Showa period (1926-1989), particularly during the war years (1937-1945). One Hole in the tang. Visible wavy temper line ("hamon") Blade is signed on the tang by the maker ("Mei") and has the Cherry blossom stamp with character for Sho.(1930's-40's). Blade tip (Kissaki) is sharp. Blade length is approximately 27 1/4 inches and overall length 41 3/4". The temper line (Hamon) is visible, and is of the wavy O-Notare (large, sweeping waves) type.The blade mountings are the simplified later WWII era Type 98 Army Shin-Gunto style, painted brown. BrassTsuba (cross guard) with cherry blossom motifs, brown cloth wrapped, ray skin grip with Imperial Army cherry blossom menuki (grip decoration), and simple Kabuto-Gane (Pommel Cap). The fuchi and pommel cap have simple matching heart motifs. Black wooden scabbard with simple suspension ring. brown tassel attached to the hilt. Overall very good condition, blade is bright with no nicks.
