Japanese Type 98 Army Shin-Gunto officer’s sword, 27 1/2 single grooved" blade. This blade is seated through a closed tsuba with one spacer, with the tang secured with a bamboo peg. The tang is unsigned. The military-style hilt is typical officer quality, complete, and all original. It is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin with the traditional 3 brass cherry blossoms all wrapped in original brown cloth tape with a twist. The kabuto-gane, (pommel) is copper/brass alloy. Inletted scabbard for lock. The scabbard (saya) is steel, and retains most of the green paint, appears to have been repainted at some point Single suspension ring, resembles a type 95 NCO or cavalry scabbard with small differences, no numbers, throat, different shaped drag, the spring clip retention system fits and lines up perfectly, works well, the blade is bright, overall very good with some spots of very light pitting. Perhaps for cavalry use.
