Japanese Naval Officer's Kai-gunto type 97 sword with Shinogi Zukuri blade shape, lacquered black scabbard with gilt brass metal mounts. The 26 1/4" blade retains most of the original factory finish, with a simulated temper line. Heavy brass tsuba (cross guard) and the large brass Seppa (spacers) and O-Seppa (Large spacers) around the tsuba are large and highly stylized. The tsuka (handle) has two gold highlighted Cherry-Blossom menuki (grip decorations), and a nice gold highlighted Kabuto-Gane (End Cap), the wooden securing peg missing, sharkskin wrapped grip with complete brown-colored Ito (cloth binding) with fine decorative collar. The sharkskin has dried out and has crazing. There also is oxidation on the various metal fittings. As typical of the pattern, Cherry Blossom motifs appear on many of the fittings. The handle is tight to the blade, with secure spacers. The crossguard, tang, fuchi, tsuka, tsuba and all 4 of the spacers are marked with western number "864", indicating an original matched set made for this specific blade. The tang has no anchor but is arsenal signed. The scabbard is scuffed. These navy swords are somewhat rare as most of them wound up on the bottom of the ocean.
