Japanese Satsuma Ornate Enamel Pottery Container
Included in this lot we have a Japanese Satsuma enamel ornate pottery container originating from the 1800's. Satsuma is a kind of Japanese pottery, most often ornately decorated with multi colored enamel. There are two kinds of Satsuma pottery, the original more plain dark clay originating from the 1600's, and the ivory colored highly decorated pottery starting in the 1800's. The white, more elaborate pottery was produced entirely as a export to other countries. This piece displays a wonderful image on each of the sides of a group of women traveling by boat over a river. Each end of the container show a carry handle and are covered in ornate enamel designs. The interior of the piece shows simple green coloration with a enamel pattern along the top rim. The piece is marked "Satsuma" across the bottom in Chinese indicating it was originally exported to China from Japan. The container shows good condition overall with minor wear. The piece measures 10 1/4" deep by 17 1/2" wide and 7 1/2" tall.
