Japanese/samurai black lacquer armor chest. Measures 24 1/2"-L, 15 3/4"-W and 13 3/4"-H. brown lacquered interior with paper tag inside thl with Japanese writing in red. Contains a pair of Haidate (Thigh Guards) Edo period. Floral design white borders, black woven material. lacquered metal plates held in place by chain mail stitched to the material. Intact with some damage to the material. A pair of Japanese Samurai Armor Edo period Kote Iron Arm/hand Guards consisting of 24 small lacquered vertical metal plates attached to chain mail sewn to black mesh green silk material, five long plates on the forearm and metal handguards. Overall good/intact with Deterioration to the silk. A pair of Edo period similar to the above attached to black material with white toned floral designs. Missing the left handguard, and a pair of chain mail Kote with Paulownia (kiri) leaf crests on upper sleeves and handguards, also known as the Kiri-mon Crest, holds deep significance in Japanese culture, particularly for samurai families and those associated with leadership, nobility and high status. Historically, the Paulownia Seal was initially the private symbol of the Japanese Imperial Family, it was viewed as the second noblest crest after the Chrysanthemum Seal, Emperors granted the Paulownia Crest to samurai and other powerful individuals as a mark of honor and distinction, symbolizing their loyalty and noble lineage. Also Samurai clans adopted the paulownia crest as part of their family emblems (kamon). The paulownia crest is particularly associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's most prominent unifiers, who adopted it as his family crest. Kote also has 10 metal symbols including the Hoshi (Star), three Tomoe, etc. Hinged top plate, green silk backing with floral designs. Overall very good condition.
