Late Edo period (1800~1849). Yoroi Bitsu brown lacquered samurai armor storage box with iron handles and fittings, lock but no key. Measures 20 1/2"-H, 15 1/4"-W. Overall very good condition, intact with some scuffs, separation in the wood lid but sound, some minor damage to the reinforcing bands. No Tomobako marks or family crests. Contains pieces of Samurai armor including a iron Menpo (Face guard), half mask called the Hanbo, missing the tare (throat guard). and nose guard. features fierce expression exposed teeth, wrinkles, cord and Kabuto attachments intact. Black lacquered interior, Okegawa-do (barrel-side) style front and back breast plates consisting of nine overlapping, horizontal riveted iron plates in front plate and seven in the back plate, hinged on the left side, lacquered brown leather interiors, some separation but complete. The top and underarm plates are leather covered with floral designs and Japanese writing. The brown and black lacquered lame, iron plates for the kusazuri, (Skirt-like hip guards) and the Sode (Shoulder guards) are included. Originated in the Sengoku period, it continued to be used and refined during the Edo period. The above listed pieces are separated due to the laces deterioration of the lacing. Appears complete, needs restoration.
