This Japanese Porcelain ?Kinko-Sennin Riding a Koi is in Excellent Condition,c1900. The scene depicted is of Kinko Sennin, a great Taoist hermit who preached the sacredness of all life and particularly the protection of fish. In Japanese art, he is often shown mounted on a large carp carrying him to the Submarine Kingdom. Kinko, a Chinese immortal who was integrated into Japanese belief systems was, as a child, given a tour of the world of rivers and lakes by the King of Fish. When Kinko returned to land, he asked his followers never to kill fish, then dove into the water and swam away with his fair-finned friends. The Sennin (teacher) was educated by the carp as to how gentle and beautiful the creatures below the sea were. Kinko was the first priest to speak for vegetarianism.
