Eighteenth century Japanese matchlock musket with gold-inlays on the barrel. Attached to the lock is a handwritten tag marked: "Police Reg./Hyogo 31292" on one side and "No. 939/L. 103.4 cm./Caliber 1.4 cm./4 nail hole/maker "Keisuke Sogi"/Cert.prior 1800 A.D.", that identifies the gun maker, caliber and approximate date that the musket was manufactured. The musket measures 49-inches long and has a pin-fastened, 36-inch octagon smoothbore barrel. The barrel has block front and rear sights and is covered with extensive gold dragon motif inlay. The brass lock has an external mainspring and hinged brass priming pan cover. The brass trigger lacks a trigger guard. The hardwood stock has a lacquer finish and a brass lined hole behind the mainspring.
BBL: 36 inch octagon
Stock: wood
Gauge: 56
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The barrel has most of the brown lacquer finish with heavy flash pitting at the muzzle and touch hole. The delicate gold inlays are in very good condition. The brass furniture has not been polished and has an attractive untouched patina. The stock remains in very fine overall condition. Most of the lacquer finish is intact and the stock shows minimal handling wear. This is a very good example of a late 18th century Japanese matchlock musket with extensive gold inlays on the barrel.
