<td width="100%">
A fine Japanese hardwood netsuke carving of Tenuki Kami, ca.1930. Dimensions are 2-1/2" tall, 7/8" widem 3/4" deep. A tenuki is a racoon-dog like animal that is native to Japan. In folklore, the tenuki kami often disquises itself as human, an itinerant Buddhist monk or woman in a kimono, to trick and deceive. It is seen as having a mischevious character. This graceful tenuki netsuke is very finely carved as atenuki pretending to be a woman dressed in a kimono. Note the expressionate face and delicate hand posture. And the netsuke actually balances on its single outstretched leg! See enlargements. The surface must be level and smooth for the foot is very small and narrow. This is a sign of a high quality workmanship. The netsuke is signed but we have not translated it. The netsuke is made of a reddish hardwood. The condition consensus is excellent condition with no injury or repair.
