Pictorial Descriptions of the Famous Places in Tokyo, published in 1887, is an unprecedented and unequaled guide to 19th Century Tokyo, in English, Japanese, and Chinese, with 32 original woodblock prints by Japan's first internationally acclaimed artist, Ogata Gekko. This may be one of the best records of 'Lost Tokyo'. Many of these places were obliterated by earthquakes and the bombings of WWII. Besides the beautiful prints, there is a delightful text describing not only famous places, but also some of the local street characters, naming prostitutes and telling their sometimes tragic stories, making this a unique, humanistic, and beautifully illustrated guide book. This is a very scarce book, and is likely the only copy that will ever be offered for sale. Contents in Very Good Condition, Cover in Good Condition. 7.25 x 5 inches, 18.5 x 12.5 cm
